GOODBYE CAPE TOWN HELLO DURBAN

MONDAY 15th NOVEMBER

I decided to search for transport from Shaka International Airport on line, having previously discovered that the airport had been opened in May, and the old one was closed down.  As the new airport is some 35Km outside of town it seemed sensible to arrange transport, as even with my recent efforts at long walks this would be a walk too far!  I found a company who claimed to do the best rates and got the receptionist to phone them up and book me transport.  My previously booked cab arrived with the same driver who had picked me up when I arrived and I was at the airport about two hours before departure time.  My orange coloured Mango Airlines plane duly took off at the scheduled time.  we arrived in Durban about 20 minutes ahead of schedule, but my case was one of the last to come through on the carousel.  I came out and inspected all the chaps standing around with name cards, but not one of them bore my name!  I reflected on the fact that we had arrived early, so decided to stand around trying to look conspicuous.  And sure enough after a few minutes, my man Anthony turned up bearing the relevant name card, and I quickly made myself known to him.

On the way into town he assured me that Durban was the best city in South Africa, told me he hadn't seen one full match during the World Cup Finals, because he was so busy working, and told me that my hotel was close to the casino.  I assured him I wasn't a gambling man so I wouldn't be venturing there.  Before he departed, he left me a company card so that I could book a return trip to the airport with Rickey.  I immediately noticed the higher humidity here and although it was overcast, the wind was positively warm.  I checked in and found that my room was 706 on the 7th floor.
