TUESDAY 14th JUNE
Got a few hours welcome sleep this morning getting up about 10.30am. Weather was warm but overcast, we reckoned somewhere around 27 degrees. The Baloo complex is owned by an Englishman from Derby who has been out here for 40 years. I must confess he has some good music playing in the background. I caught Charlie Ryan's Hot Rod Lincoln and quite a selection of blues. Having named the place Baloo, each room is named after a character from the book. Ours is appropriately enough, Dizzy!
"Dizzy" is in the middle.
Other parts of Baloo.
We got an American breakfast here for $4.50 which consisted of two fried eggs and two rashers of bacon, fresh fruit juice, coffee, rolls and jam. It was enough to get the old motor rolling again. We are located virtually at one end of the town with the beach just outside the complex. After catching up on the blog, there is free WiFi here although it seems to cut out at times as does the power - and at present I cannot send e-mails, but I think that is an AOL problem and I have contacted them about this on the help line.
It was then time to stroll along the beach edge into town, passing the numerous stalls on our left, and restaurants and bars on our right. Eventually we picked a place for lunch and opted for prawns in chili with rice. Well it was the best meal I've had in a long time, certainly since Oakhurst. And it all cost $5.00. Beers here seem to vary between $1 and $1.25. We returned to our room and I had a little siesta, before Alex whupped me 2-0 at pool which is under one of the canopies in the complex.
We headed into town again and Alex spotted a little bar hut with the sign "Happy Hour 6-8". As we were within that time frame we agreed it would be churlish to by-pass the opportunity. Carlo was looking after the bar for his uncle assisted by a blonde young lady who it turned out was English, who later in the week cooks supper at the Baloo. We started off with a Maranquilla Daquiri and followed up with Sex On The Beach and then returned to our first choice. We said we'd be back tomorrow to celebrate Alex's birthday if they gave us a good deal, and the offer was an extension of Happy Hour from 4 to 8! Asked to guess his age, the young lady put it at 30, and seemed a tad embarrased when told it would be 23! We had seen several groups of fisherman bringing in their catches earlier, and Alex asked which were the best restaurants for fish. One was the one we had been to for lunch, and another was just behind us. We opted to go there.
It was nothing to write home about from a decor point of view, but boy was the food good! I had grilled swordfish and Alex had massive prawns done in some sort of sauce again with chilli. We ate half the plate each and then swopped plates, thus sampling all the food on offer. We also tried some starter pancakes that are a local specialty, and also went for the best beer, Club. Again it was all really very cheap. A stroll back along the sea front saw us back at the Baloo and in bed before 10.00pm.
